Managing Director, CPA

Michael (Mike) Conkey is a Managing Director with The Concours Group. He has over 25 years experience in the accounting industry and his range of experience is a combination of public accounting and industry experience while developing expertise in the areas of banking, manufacturing, software, real estate/construction and non-profit industries. He has served as the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President/Corporate Controller of public and privately held companies.

Experience

Mr. Conkey began his career in public accounting with a large, local CPA firm and then with Grant Thornton, the next level of “Big 4” accounting firms. As an Audit Manager, he specialized in working with clients in the banking (mortgage banking, savings and loans, retail banks and regulatory holding companies) and manufacturing industries. He later formed his own public accounting firm and primarily worked with clients in the banking and non-profit sectors.

Mr. Conkey later served as VP, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Controller for publically held companies with assets over $2B in the software and home construction/real estate industries. Some of his successes included:

  • Initiated, designed and developed a complete monthly financial statement package that was distributed and reviewed with Executive Management. A combination of Excel/Pivot Tables, system-generated reports and the inclusion of business plan information were incorporated into the presentation so that a comparison of actual results against plan could be measured and variances explained.
  • Worked as the Accountable Business Manager for the conversion of a legacy system to Oracle E-One and other applications and the integration of the systems with Oracle Fusion Middeleware technology. The project lasted approximately 1 ½ years with a total capital spend of $15M which included various phases of design, testing, conversion, training, etc. This was the second conversion project that he had managed.
  • Developed a company-wide, project based, budget review process. This included a formalized monthly review of all project budgets that included the land development, construction, purchasing, marketing, and accounting departments. Action plans were developed during the budget meetings and formalized minutes were taken that included follow-up items and agreed courses of action.
  • Worked with a startup company and lead them through a public acquisition. This included analyzing the pros and cons of such a move and then coordinating all activities with the various underwriters, investment group, legal and accounting firms and the SEC.
  • Developed tools and reports that assisted management in understanding key operations of the business. This included the development of inventory and other reports with department managers that accentuated the construction and completion status of homes under construction, sale status, selling rates, projected lot profitability and home delivery variances from the annual business plan. These tools were used to help determine if additional production was warranted.

Mr. Conkey is currently working with The Concours Group that provides forensic business accounting and analysis and management oversight. His current assignments have included assisting a real estate company that is controlled by a professional fiduciary.
